Before being known as "The Professor" in the poker world, Lederer grew up in Concord, New Hampshire, and in his youth was introduced to the world of cards by his family. As a child, his father taught him how to play chess. After his teenage years, Lederer cultivated his interest in playing competitively and steadily honed his skills.

However, his father, Richard Lederer, is a writer and former professor of linguistics at St. Paul's School. CAREER WITH POKER
After graduating from high school, Howard turned to chess in New York. During this period, Lederer enrolled at Columbia University, but ended up dedicating all his time to studying and improving his poker skills. So, Lederer ended up being helped by his sister, Annie Duke, to play in Billings, Montana.
In 1986, Lederer made his big debut in a major poker tournament, the World Series of Poker. That year, Lederer participated in the Main Event, but ended up being eliminated in fifth place and raising the amount of US$ 10,000. After that, Lederer decided he would move to Las Vegas, and in 1993 Howard focused his life on poker.
In the same year of 1993, Lederer returned to the WSOP and made a total of eight final tables until the year 1999. However, he was never successful in winning the prize and the tournament bracelet.
